TAMPA (AP) -- The Tampa Bay Buccanneers made a resounding statement in the NFC South with a 27-3 win over the Carolina Panthers. The Bucs' special teams got things going early when rookie Geno Hayes blocked a punt and returned it 22 yards for Tampa Bay's first touchdown, and after that they never looked back. Jeff Garcia threw for 173 yards and a touchdown in his first start since week one for the Buccanneers.
ATLANTA (AP) -- Jason Elam nailed a 48-yard field goal with no time left to lift the Atlanta Falcons over the Chicago Bears 22-20. It was the last of five field goals Elam kicked for Atlanta, after it appeared as if the Bears had pulled off a late rally. Kyle Orton's 17-yard touchdown pass put Chicago up by a point with just 11 seconds left. But Chicago pooched the kickoff and Harry Douglas managed a short return to the Atlanta 44. Rookie Matt Ryan hooked up with Michael Jenkins on a 26-yard pass, and Elam did the rest. The Falcons sit in a three-way tie for the NFC South lead with Tampa Bay and Carolina. All three teams are 4-2.
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) -- The St. Louis Rams have their first win of the season, and it comes at the expense of the Washington Redskins. The Rams snapped the Redskins' four-game winning streak with a 19-17 win. Josh Brown's fourth field goal of the game was a 49-yarder that came as time expired. The Rams couldn't make it easy though. Offensive lineman Richie Incognito was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for aiming some choice words at an official as the Rams tried to run the clock out. Clinton Portis scored two touchdowns for the Redskins.
HOUSTON (AP) -- It was a wild ending in Houston, where the Texans got a three-yard touchdown run from quarterback Matt Schaub with three seconds left to beat the Miami Dolphins 29-28. The Dolphins had taken a 28-23 lead with 1:45 left when Ronnie Brown punched it in from six yards out. Schaub also threw for 379 yards and a touchdown. It's the first win of the season for Houston.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Minnesota's Ryan Longwell hit a 26-yard field goal with nine seconds left to knock off the still-winless Detroit Lions 12-10. It was a day of thrilling plays for Minnesota, who started the rally when Gus Frerotte hit Bernard Berrian with an 86-yard touchdown pass in the 3rd quarter. The Vikings got on the board in the 1st quarter when they sacked Lions quarterback Dan Orlovsky in the end zone for a safety.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- The Cincinnati Bengals are the NFL's other winless team, dropping to 0-6 with a 26-14 loss to the New York Jets. Thomas Jones ran for two touchdowns and caught another from Brett Favre as the Jets improved to 3-2.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- It's like old times again in Indianapolis. Peyton Manning tossed two touchdown passes to Marvin Harrison and another to Reggie Wayne and the Colts had no trouble beating the Baltimore Ravens 31-3. Manning was good for 271 yards through the air to rejuvenate a Colts offense that had sputtered through the start of the season. The offensive fireworks came even though Indy lost all-pro running back Joseph Addai to a hamstring injury in the 1st quarter. Third-string running back Mike Hart also left the game with a knee injury.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- The coach is new but the results are still the same for the Oakland Raiders. The silver and black were demolished by the New Orleans Saints on the road 34-3. Saints quarterback Drew Brees picked apart the Raiders, completing 26 of 30 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns. Reggie Bush ran for a touchdown and caught another from Brees. The Raiders were led by interim coach Tom Cable for the first time since firing Lane Kiffin last month.
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Later tonight the San Diego Chargers host a rematch of last year's AFC Championship game against the New England Patriots. The Pats, who are 3-1, won that game last year 21-12 in New England. The Chargers come into tonight's game with a record of 2-3.
